In general, if you're having trouble with LiveText not connecting through the network or a router, follow the steps outlined below first. This will eliminate the possibility that the problem is in LiveText or the TriCaster system.
Once a connection is established and working settings can be reconfigured to use a router.
In order to follow all the suggestions and steps below you will need a working knowledge of networks, navigating the network panels in Windows and setting up connections between machines. Some instruction is provided in these areas but full documentation falls outside the scope of a simple troubleshooting article.
NOTE: (When using a router, make sure port 5901, 5902 TCP and port 5901 UDP are open)
Specific Symptoms
LiveText does not connect/show as a source in TriCaster Live Production.
Steps to Fix/Workaround
Connecting the TriCaster to a computer running LiveText via Standard Ethernet Cable:
1. Check that the PC running LiveText is connected to the TriCaster via a standard Ethernet cable.
2. Make sure the LiveText computer and the TriCaster both have their IP addresses specified. See section below:“Instructions to set IP address manually”
3. Make sure the LiveText computer name is less than 15 characters
4. Make sure the Work Group is the same on both the TriCaster and the PC running LiveText. See section below: “Instructions to check the Computer Name and WorkGroup”
Once the two systems are connected via Ethernet and properly set up:
- Launch the TriCaster Software first,
- then on the other computer, Launch LiveText.
1. In LiveText, open an existing project or create a new one.
2. Click the Live Button in the upper right of the screen.
3. SD TriCaster: Click the External tab, then from the drop down menu for External 1, select the LiveText computer from the drop down list.
XD TriCaster: Click the drop down menu in the Network Preview Window and select the LiveText computer from the drop down list.
Instructions to check the Computer Name and WorkGroup:
For Windows XP PC:
1. From the Desktop, Right Click on My Computer and Select Properties.
2. Click the tab “Computer Name”
3. Click the “Change” button towards the bottom to change the Computer name or workgroup.
For Windows Vista or 7 PC:
1. From the Desktop, Right Click on My Computer and Select Properties.
2. Towards the bottom Click on “change settings”
3. Click the “Change” button towards the bottom to change the Computer name or workgroup.
Instructions to Set IP address Manually:
For Windows Vista or 7 PC:
1. Click on Start down in the toolbar, then scroll up to Control Panel.
NOTE:In the upper right of the control panel, make sure you are viewing by Large or Small Icons.
2. In the Control Panel, Click Network and Sharing Center.
3. Approximately ¼ the way down the screen, Click Local Area Connection. This will open the Local Area Connection Status.
4. Click Properties in the bottom left.
5. Select “Internet Protocol Version 4” (TCP/IPv4) and then Click Properties
.
6. Under the General Tab, select the option “Use the following IP address:”
Fill in the following information:
- IP address: “192.168.0.10”
- Subnet Mask: “255.255.255.0”
- Default Gateway: “192.168.0.1”
7. Click OK, then close the rest of the open windows and restart the PC.
For Windows XP PC:
1. Ensure the PC running LiveText is connected to the TriCaster via a standard Ethernet cable.
2. Click the Start icon, then Control Panel.
Make sure you are viewing the Control Panel in Classic View. You can switch by clicking Switch in the upper left hand of the control panel.
3. Click Network Connections.
4. Right Click on “Local Area Connection” and Select Properties.
5. Highlight “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and then Click Properties.
6. Under the General Tab, select the option “Use the following IP address:”
Fill in the following information:
- IP address: “192.168.0.10”
- Subnet Mask: “255.255.255.0”
- Default Gateway: “192.168.0.1”
7. Click OK, then close the rest of the open windows and restart the PC.
For TriCaster:
***Depending on the Model TriCaster, exit to Windows or Admin and follow the steps for Windows 7 or Windows XP. Make sure you set the IP address to be 1 digit different than the other computer. Example: LiveText computer IP address is set to 192.168.0.10, make sure the TriCaster IP address is set to 192.168.0.11.
